The City of Paducah is nearing the completion of the Riverfront Infrastructure Improvement Project, also known as the BUILD Grant project. A grand opening celebration is in the planning stages for September. One of the final elements of the project is the installation of nearly a dozen crosswalks in downtown Paducah.
Beginning Tuesday, August 18, crews will install crosswalks at the following locations:
- North 6th Street and Park Avenue | One marked crosswalk located along the north side of Park Avenue and crossing North 6th Street.
- North 5th Street and Park Avenue | One marked crosswalk located on the north side of Park Avenue at the Convention Center entrance and crossing North 5th Street.
- North 4th Street floodwall opening | One marked crosswalk at the floodwall opening.
- Executive Blvd. | One marked crosswalk at the floodwall opening.
- Harrison Street and North 3rd Street | One marked crosswalk at the floodwall opening.
- Madison Street and North 3rd Street | One marked crosswalk on the east side of North 3rd Street and crossing Madison Street.
- Madison Street and North 2nd Street | One marked crosswalk at the floodwall opening.
- Jefferson Street and North 2nd Street | All four approaches to the intersection will have marked crosswalks.
The public should expect temporary roadway closures lasting only a few hours at each location while a crosswalk is installed. The pavement markings are expected to dry and cure within approximately one hour after completion at each site, after which the crosswalk will open to pedestrians. Crews expect installation of all the crosswalks to take approximately two to three days, weather-permitting.
The BUILD Grant project includes several improvements throughout the riverfront and downtown area. In addition to the new crosswalks, the project includes the construction of a 500-foot-long excursion pier and excursion plaza, intersection improvements at the entrance to the Convention Center, development of a multimodal pathway adjacent to the Quilt Murals, creation of a compass rose feature and enhanced park space with a terraced mound and seating near the transient dock, and the installation of new bus shelters.
The project is funded primarily through a $10.4 million BUILD grant (Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development) through the U.S. Maritime Administration along with $3.5 million in State funds. Crews began mobilizing for the project on November 21, 2024.
